In novemeber I wrote to Cristián Gonzalez from Estudio Gonzalez to make an internship in his office. He just answered and he said he would have a free spot for march. I'm already doing an internship in Liquid for a month and then later in February in Felicidad. But sounds fun.

I'm starting my internship this monday at Liquid . At the same time I'm working on a bank selling accounts. So I have to run from one place to the other. After finishing this internship I'll intern for an extra month at Felicidad Publica. They do very cool stuff, but their office is not so easy to access and it's far away from my house. Busy summer.

I've been trying to access Cinema 4D for a while. Noone here uses 3D modeling for illustration but I'm kinda sure it's going to be a thing. But they don't teach it in uni. I contacted the local supplyer and they said the license is 300USD a year for a student and I wonder who the fuck can pay that while being a student, just to learn. Insane

Today I got the tickets to NY. I'm traveling July the 22nd. I'll stay in Time Sqaure, in the Crown Plaza, which is crazy. They also gave me pocket money and a lot of vouchers. The full package.

Today it was the "A punto" conference. It was exhausting, at moments chaotic and a bit tiring but it was a BIG success. Never have I seen a Faculty activity with such good assistance. It was packed and people had to stand or sit on the stairs. At the end we had speakers from the public sector (Culture ministery), Chile Diseño and a lot of different agencies and studios. It was a nice and well organised event and we did it mostly alone. The Dean was there, and the rest of the faculty too. They are all very supportive and it is a pleasure to work with them.
(Reviwing these pictures now — 7 years later — I'm so shocked by the gender inequality that they represent. While most of the audience is female, and most designers in Chile are female, all speakers that day were male).

Big news! Today was the event for Top Underwear and I won the 1st prize. This is sooo huge, there were so many participants and Oscar Ríos (the jury) is a chilean design icon. I'm happy. He said my desing was smart, as I referenced Andy Warhol’s Pop Art and brought it to Chile.
I've learnt so far, that design competitions are a lot about the jury. I knew Oscar Rios is an academic and he teaches design history. He enjoys these avant-garde movements and such an "academic" proposal would catch his attention. I guess it is always a good idea to reaserch who the juries are before entering a competition.
Now I'm going to New York. I've never travelled alone and I've never been to the US.( 22 )

We are finally announcing the conference and we called it "A punto" (eng. almost there). We are inviting the whole design faculty and we are also proving a cocktail afterwards. This is maybe the biggest action we have done so far and it's working out pretty nicely so far :)

With the Design Students Council, we are organising a conference that will happen in less than a month. We are inviting 10 design agencies to pitch their pov on the national design job market. This activity is organised to help the fresh graduates and those in their last year understand what are their alternatives, and what do the design agencies expect from them.

I continue making assets for ASIPLA. We have agreed on a monthly rate, which includes regular tasks like the design of the newsletter or general brand support. I can see how I'm getting faster and better, I've also learnt how to use mockups to present the ideas better.

I am beyond excited because I got an email saying I'm one of the 10 finalist for the Top Underwear design competition. They are doing an award ceremony in Galería Isabel Aninat, when they will reveal the 3 winners.
The designs will be exhibited in the gallery for the event and the jury (Oscar Ríos) will be there to announce the winners.( 18 )

Today we had a calligraphy workshop with Silvia Cordero Vega. She is a super talented calligrapher and it was a very nice workshop. She was very impressed with my work and she thought "I was a natural" which ofc is nice to hear. I don't think I'm that much of a natural, but I've been following Luca Barcellona for a while, and I've been looking at his letters a lot. All I did was to try to do it like he does it, very poorly.
Javiera also was impressed by it and asked me if she could keep one of my pieces "just a little respect". I gave it to her and she framed it and hang it in her wall at home.( 17 )

I saw this ad for a new design competition by Top Underwear. Top Underwear is a very popular underwear brand and they are looking for a "trendy", "modern" and "innovative" design to print in a male special edition. The first prize is a trip to NY all included.

I've been doing a lot of designs for Asipla, including a very long corporate presentation and some banners for their newsletters.
They are now asking for stationary, including folders, letterheads, envelopes, rollups and a branded wall for their office.

I did some drawings for the booklet. There are portraits of workers, that need to spend a lot of time under the sun, that is stronger every year.
As I'm talking about heat I decided to blur the charcoal, as if they are melting. The blur also gives a sense of intense heat. Like the wavy air above hot pavement.

Today we began a new project in Uni. We are designing an editorial piece. They gave us each a conceptual starting point. Mine says:
"What happens if all humans gather in one place and we all jump at the same time". The scientific answer to that question is "nothing". We are so minuscule in comparison to the earth, the planet wouldn't even notice.
From that question I decided to do my piece about climate change and the COP21 and I called it: Ífimos (eng. negligible).

At the end the logo was finalised and looked like this:
This was the begining of a year of work relationship with Asipla, through Fer. I did a lot of assets for them, redesigned a lot of presentations, created graphics for events, did the brand guidelines, templates and banners. It was very good first real life challenge, because of the variety of assets. The logo I did for free. The rest of the pieces I did for very little money. One has to start somewhere.

Fer really seemed to have liked the first alternative.
(Now that I look at it (7 years later) I know visually it has so many issues, and it's overall bad. However, I find it interesting to have had that opportunity when I didn't even know what i was doing).
I sent back some color explorations, a key visual and a sub-logo for their new concept "Virtuous Recycling". Some of the comments were:
"The logo for "Virtuous Recycling", we LOVE it. As it is. Don't change it.
For the new Asipla logo, we will take the "plastic blue" one".

I sent Fer some first explorations on how the logo could look like. She wants the logo to incorporate the recycling arrows and integrate it in the "a". I found this a bit complicated, but I gave it a try. The last one works the best, but it would be nicer to have a roman a, instead of an italian, so the transition with the logos is smoother.

Fer want to work with me to refresh the image of the national Plastic Industry Association (ASIPLA). They have very outdated old fashion logo and they haven't really defined a visual identity. She is the General Manager now and reports directly to the board, so I guess it's a good opportunity.

Europe is great. It's a bit tiring as we are traveling around a lot, visiting around 15 cities in 2 months. We stay between 2 and 5 days in each city and we visit every turistic landmark. But it has been great to travel with Paci and Trini. I usually get cranky when I'm hungry, but otherwise the vibe is great.
I got an email today from Gonzalo Krebs, and he asked if I wanted to be his assistant for "Technical Drawing" or "Analytical Drawing". I can't cuz I have classes at the same time, but I feel honoured he even asked.( 5 )
